Most everyone loves candles, especially the decorative fragrant varieties. Even if candles are never burned they look lovely in candle displays, on candle trays, or as centerpieces on dining room tables.
Decorative pillar candles can be quite expensive, but it is not necessary to buy costly pillar candles enhanced with embellishments. You can decorate plain pillar candles that will look just as good as or better than expensive decorative candles sold in stores. They are perfect for decorating the home, and they make fantastic gifts for any occasion. Button Flowers You can create decorative candles embellished with beautiful flowers designed with buttons. All you need are several flat buttons and pins with round plastic heads in various colors. Use the pins to attach the buttons to the sides of pillar candles. Push the pins into the button holes, and surround some of the buttons with extra pins in colors of your choice. Use rows of green pins to form flower stems and leaves.
The varieties of whimsical flowers you can create are truly endless. Decorative Pushpins Pushpins meant for holding notes on corkboard come in all shapes and sizes, and they are not just for posting messages. They make fantastic decorations for plain pillar candles. When searching for craft supplies you will find everything from ladybugs to sunflowers and everything in between. Simply press pushpins of your choice into the sides of pillar candles while trying to space them as equally as possible. An ordinary pillar candle can be turned into an extraordinary display in a matter of minutes.
Pressed Flowers Dried pressed flowers are extraordinarily beautiful, and they can be displayed on the sides of pillar candles. Consider pressing and drying small thin flowers such as violas or pansies, and burn a pillar candle long enough to create a small pool of melted wax. Before the melted wax hardens, brush it onto the back of a pressed flower, and apply it to the side of the candle. If you prefer not to burn the candle you are embellishing, buy a second candle exclusively for burning, and use the melted wax from that candle. After the flower has been applied, lightly brush a very thin layer of wax over the top to seal and protect it. If desired, tie a narrow satin ribbon around the top third of the candle to match one of the colors in the flower.
Cinnamon Sticks and Vanilla Beans Fresh cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans fill a room with fragrance. What better way to decorate a pillar candle than with fragrant cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans? Choose vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks of appropriate size to surround a pillar candle of your choice. Apply a small amount of candle glue to each piece, and alternate cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans around the candle until the sides are completely covered. Secure the cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans further by tying colorful paper twist around the top and bottom of the candle. It will smell fantastic, and even though it will not be burned, it will fill the room with aroma for weeks to come.
